Three UNESCO Treasures and a Remarkable Story
Few places in France offer such a rich journey through history in a single day.
This private tour combines the magnificent Cité de Carcassonne, Europe's largest fortified medieval city, the peaceful landscapes of the Canal du Midi, one of the greatest engineering achievements of the seventeenth century, and the spectacular Castles of Lastours, whose dramatic ruins tell the story of the Cathar Crusade.
From Roman foundations to medieval warfare and the golden age of French engineering, this experience reveals the many layers of Southern France's remarkable past.
The Medieval City of Carcassonne
Your day begins with a comprehensive guided walking tour of the UNESCO-listed Cité de Carcassonne.
Explore its winding streets, defensive walls and impressive architecture while discovering nearly two thousand years of history. Learn how a Roman settlement evolved into one of Europe's greatest fortified cities, how the Viscounts of Trencavel transformed Carcassonne into a powerful medieval stronghold, and how the city became a key stage of the Albigensian Crusade.
Your visit also includes the Château Comtal, the fortress at the heart of the citadel. Explore its courtyards, ramparts and defensive systems while gaining a deeper understanding of medieval military architecture and the restoration led by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, whose work helped save Carcassonne for future generations.
Lunch Along the Canal du Midi
Leaving the medieval city behind, you'll travel to the peaceful surroundings of the Canal du Midi, another UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lunch is served in one of our favourite restaurants overlooking the canal, where the slower rhythm of southern France invites you to relax and enjoy regional cuisine.
Lunch is included and served from the restaurant's set menu, accompanied by local wines.
For those wishing to make the day even more special, our Gourmet Experience replaces the restaurant's set menu with the freedom to order from the à la carte menu, together with an aperitif and a wider selection of regional wines.
During your time by the canal, your guide will explain the extraordinary vision of Pierre-Paul Riquet, whose masterpiece linked the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean more than three centuries ago. Discover the ingenious locks, bridges and hydraulic innovations that continue to make the Canal du Midi one of the world's greatest civil engineering achievements.
The Castles of Lastours
In the afternoon, continue to one of the Languedoc's most spectacular landscapes.
Perched high above the Orbiel Valley, the four Castles of Lastours dominate a rocky ridge and create one of the region's most dramatic panoramas.
From the famous belvedere, enjoy breathtaking views while your guide brings the landscape to life. Discover the strategic importance of these fortresses, their role during the Cathar Crusade and the history of the powerful Cabaret seigneury that resisted the northern crusaders.
The exceptional viewpoint provides the perfect setting to understand both the military history of the site and the wider story of medieval Occitania.
More Than a Medieval Tour
This experience brings together three defining chapters of Southern France's history.
A legendary medieval fortress.
A masterpiece of engineering.
A dramatic Cathar stronghold.
Together, they tell the story of a region shaped by power, faith, innovation and resilience.
Whether this is your first visit to the Languedoc or you wish to explore its heritage in greater depth, this tour offers an unforgettable introduction to one of France's most fascinating regions.
