A once-in-a-lifetime experience
This is our longest day tour—and every kilometre is worth it.
Rising dramatically above the rugged landscapes of Southern France, the castles of Peyrepertuse and Quéribus are among the country's most extraordinary historical sites. Perched high on rocky peaks, they reward visitors with spectacular panoramas, fascinating history and an unforgettable sense of adventure.
Travelling in a relaxed small group with your licensed history guide, you'll discover one of the most captivating regions of Occitanie while following the story of the Cathars, the Albigensian Crusade and the medieval frontier between the Kingdom of France and the Crown of Aragon.
This is far more than a castle tour. It's an experience many of our guests describe as the highlight of their stay in Southern France.
A Scenic Journey Through Southern France
The journey itself is part of the experience.
Heading south towards the Mediterranean coast, you'll enjoy ever-changing landscapes while your guide introduces the history, geography and culture of this remarkable region.
On the return journey, we'll follow a completely different route through the beautiful Aude Valley, driving alongside the spectacular gorges carved by the River Aude before returning to Carcassonne.
This scenic loop allows you to discover some of the most beautiful and unspoilt landscapes in Occitanie.
Explore Peyrepertuse Castle
Perched high above the Corbières, Peyrepertuse is one of the largest and most impressive medieval fortresses in France.
The climb requires a little effort, but the reward is unforgettable. From the ramparts, breathtaking views stretch across vineyards, mountains, the Pyrenees and, on clear days, even the Mediterranean Sea.
As you explore the fortress with your licensed guide, you'll discover why these castles played such an important role in the turbulent history of medieval Southern France.
A Light Lunch
Enjoy a light lunch in a carefully selected local restaurant before continuing your journey through Cathar Country.
Like every Vin en Vacances experience, there is always time to relax, enjoy the surroundings and recharge before the afternoon's adventure.
Discover Quéribus Castle
Our second stop is the magnificent castle of Quéribus, dramatically perched on its rocky summit overlooking the former frontier between France and Spain.
Often associated with the final years of the Cathars, Quéribus is one of the most iconic monuments in Southern France. As you explore its remarkable keep and admire its spectacular setting, your guide will reveal the fascinating events that transformed these mountaintop fortresses into symbols of an extraordinary period in European history.
Together, Peyrepertuse and Quéribus are part of the Royal Fortresses of Languedoc, France's official nomination for UNESCO World Heritage status. This remarkable collection of eight medieval fortresses celebrates the extraordinary military architecture developed by the French Crown following the Albigensian Crusade..
